Summer 2003

Child Advocacy Center

This summer, SCAN will be focusing on an exciting new initiative to develop and implement a Child Advocacy Center (CAC) which would serve victims of serious physical abuse and child sexual abuse in the greater Richmond area.

A CAC would provide a comprehensive intervention system designed with the victimized child as its primary focus. Specifically, CAC's provide the following services:

  • child and family forensic interviews
  • investigation
  • mental health treatment
  • medical services
  • prosecution
  • victim advocacy
  • multidisciplinary case review
  • case tracking

While each CAC is different because they are designed to meet the particular needs of the area they serve, the main goals of a CAC are to:

  1. Reduce trauma to abused/neglected children by minimizing the number of interviews and by providing a friendly and non-threatening environment for the interviews
  2. Increase immediate crisis support and ongoing counseling available to victimized children and their families
  3. Increase communication and collaboration among the disciplines involved with cases (medical, mental health, attorneys, law enforcement, and Child Protective Services)
  4. Improve the investigation and prosecution of child abuse/neglect cases (i.e. hold more offenders accountable)

We will continue to post information regarding the Child Advocacy Center as the planning process progresses.
