Greater Richmond SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) is a local nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect in the Greater Richmond area. SCAN was founded in 1991 in response to the rapidly growing rate of child abuse and neglect in the City of Richmond and its surrounding counties. SCAN is an affiliate of Prevent Child Abuse Virginia.
By providing the awareness, support and education needed to enhance the lives of children. SCAN's services promote positive parenting, strengthen families and help create a community that values and cares for its children. Our programs include the Family Support Program, the Public Education Program, and the Child Advocacy Center (CAC).
SCAN serves families from the City of Richmond and the Counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico. During the July 2006 - June 2007 fiscal year, the Family Support Program served 352 parents and 234 children, all from families that have experienced or are at a high risk of experiencing child abuse and/or neglect. The CAC served 154 Richmond children who were victims of severe physical or sexual abuse and 20 of their non-offender parents.
Unlike other SCAN programs, which target high risk families, FAM services are for ALL parents because child-rearing presents universal challenges for everyone. SCAN reaches an estimated 15,000 people each year through the public education and FAM activities.
SCAN depends on the generous support of the community to help fund our child abuse and neglect prevention and treatment services. SCAN receives donations from individuals, corporations, congregations, civic organizations, and private foundations. Funding is also provided through specials events, government grants (state), and contributions from local governments. SCAN's budget for the 2007-2008 fiscal year, which began July 1, is $819,423. Each year, SCAN develops a fund raising plan to meet its financial needs. This year, our fund raising goal is $615,000.
To prevent and treat child abuse and neglect throughout the Greater Richmond area.
